School visits

13th June 2019

Geoffrey Cox QC, Member of Parliament for Torridge and West Devon, visited High Bickington CofE Academy and Great Torrington School on Friday 7 June as part his regular programme of school engagement.

The MP has worked with both schools over the years, supporting High Bickington in their bid to build a new school, and Great Torrington to obtain funding for various projects.

Earlier this year, Mr Cox lobbied the Minister for the School System in support of Great Torrington School’s bid for funding from the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF). The bid was successful and the funding awarded will enable the school to undertake essential roofing repairs, which are necessary in order to secure the future provision of the school.

Following the visit to Great Torrington School, Mr Cox said: “I was pleased to visit Great Torrington School as part of my regular programme of school visits and to discuss with acting head, Andy Bloodworth, the progress of the school how their recent award from the CIF fund is to be used. I am delighted that I was able to assist the school in securing this vital funding.

The friendliness and pastoral care at Great Torrington is second to none and a tribute to all the staff and pupils.

I have agreed to return in September to follow up and I am keen to work with Mr Bloodworth and the governors to promote the success of the school.”

Mr Cox then travelled to High Bickington CofE Academy where he was escorted by the Head of School, Rob Norton. Mr Cox answered questions from pupils before meeting the staff and discussing developments at the school since its conversion to an Academy. One of the challenges for the school is that it operates between two sites whilst a new building is developed. After his visit, Mr Cox commented:

“I have long believed it necessary to ensure that High Bickington has a modern, purpose-built school.  The new classroom is a good start; however, it is vital to complete the build, moving all children to one site.”

Mr Cox committed to lobbying the Schools Minister on behalf of the school which will be bidding for funding from the Condition Improvement Fund later this year.
