Save Money on Energy Bills

23rd January 2018

Geoffrey Cox encourages Winkleigh residents to save money on their bills by switching energy suppliers on 27 January.

  • Residents in Winkleigh could be collectively losing over £600,000 – up to £412 each - by sticking with costly electricity tariffs
  • TV star and switching ambassador Rachel Riley has teamed up with uSwitch and is coming to Winkleigh on Saturday 27 January to fix the problem once and for all
  • Over 90% of Winkleigh’s households are stuck on expensive Standard Variable Tariffs – far higher than the national average
  • Nearly a third (30%) of bill payers would rather spend their extra cash on a holiday instead of bills, while 29% would put it in savings
  • uSwitch calls on residents to grab their bill and come along to Winkleigh Village Hall to meet Rachel Riley, save money and win prizes

Television star and energy switching ambassador Rachel Riley is coming to Devon to launch a national campaign to get Britain’s households saving money on their energy bills, so they can spend it on the things they love.

Teaming up with price comparison site, Rachel will be in Winkleigh – a village with one of the lowest switching rates in the country – on Saturday 27 January to show people how quickly and simply they could be up to £412 better off.

Switching data from shows that just 6.5% of customers in the area switched tariff between 2014 and 2017. That means over 90% of households there (over 1,500 homes) may well be on poor value Standard Variable Tariffs and collectively overpaying for their electricity by up to £625,000 – an enormous amount for just one village.

Geoffrey Cox QC, MP for Torridge and West Devon says: “It is important that my constituents have the ability to switch with ease from one electricity or gas supplier to another. There has been a significant increase in competition; in 2010 the Big Six suppliers had 99 per cent of the domestic energy market but there are now over 50 providers, with independent suppliers making up 18 per cent of the energy market. I am pleased that uSwitch will be helping my constituents find the best value for money deals on their electricity or gas supply and encourage them to ‘get switching’ on Saturday 27 January.”

On Saturday 27 January, Rachel and the uSwitch team will be helping locals win back that money by switching to cheaper tariffs, with a switching clinic running from 10am to 4pm at Winkleigh Village Hall.

Whether they live in the village or not, is inviting everyone to grab their bill and come along to meet Rachel and find out how they could quickly save up to £412.

There’ll be food and drink to keep people fuelled while they speak to a uSwitch energy expert for advice about how to save money. They can even compare energy deals and switch at the event if they wish to.

Anyone who switches before the end of the day – or has done so themselves in the last 12 months – will be entered into a prize draw for one of ten exclusive prizes.

Across the country, energy regulator Ofgem calculates energy switching is now at 17% annually. But in Winkleigh, just 6.5% of households switched in the last three years according to uSwitch data - the lowest switching level in Devon.

In fact, uSwitch research suggests only 11% of people across the South West say they’ve considered switching energy tariff to save money. But nearly a third (31%) of bill payers in the region find it a stretch to pay their monthly bills and don’t have cash left over to do the things they enjoy - in spite of the fact that only takes 10 minutes to find serious savings.

That’s why Rachel Riley and will be helping people understand how quick and easy it is to find a better deal, so households across the area can ease their financial worries and use the money they save on something more meaningful to themselves.

If they had more cash available, people in the South West say they would most likely put it towards a holiday (30%) or save it for a rainy day (29%). But quality time with loved ones is also important, with 9% of people saying they would buy gifts and treats for friends and family. Others would opt to clear their debts (7%), enjoy a slap-up meal out (4%), or buy something nice for themselves (4%).

Speaking ahead of the event, switching ambassador Rachel Riley said: “We want to show people how simple it is to switch and reduce your bills keeping more of your own money in your pocket to spend on whatever you like! Working out exactly which deal is best for your family can seem daunting, that’s why I’m joining forces with uSwitch to help people easily switch, save and win.

“Winkleigh can show the nation how simple it is to start enjoying the important things in life. Grab your bill and come and see us in the village hall on 27th January. There’s over half a million pounds to save that could be staying in your pocket, leaving you to start the year with more to spend on the things you love.”

Shona Eyre, energy expert, said: “It’s staggering that the residents of one village could be as much as £600,000 better off if they moved off poor value electricity deals.

“For just a few minutes work you could save up to £412, which could make a big difference to your finances - particularly if winter bills put a strain on your spending.

“We can’t wait to visit Winkleigh and get people switching and saving. Whether you live in the village or not, we’ll be there to help as many people as possible.”
