RMB Chivenor Campaign

13th February 2019

Torridge and West Devon MP, Geoffrey Cox QC, has written to the Secretary of State for Defence supporting Peter Heaton-Jones MP’s campaign to retain the Royal Marines Barracks in North Devon.

Peter Heaton-Jones, the MP for North Devon, handed a petition signed by 5,000 local residents to the Defence Secretary last week.

In a letter to the Defence Secretary last month, Mr Cox described the importance of the facility to local communities in Northern Devon and the serious consequences of its closure on the local economy.

The response he received this week outlines that an announcement will be made in the coming weeks.

Mr Cox, who is also the Government’s Attorney General, said: “The letter gives some reassurance that the local campaigning, led by Peter Heaton-Jones MP, is making a strong impact on the MoD’s decision and I will continue raising the case for retaining the Barracks at the highest levels.”

Peter Heaton-Jones MP said: “This is another example of neighbouring MPs working closely together for the good of Northern Devon. I warmly welcome Geoffrey’s support; the response he has received from the MoD confirms once again that the community’s campaign to save RMB Chivenor must continue.”
