Mental Health Services

23rd July 2018

The Rt Hon Geoffrey Cox QC, Member of Parliament for Torridge and West Devon, met with Chief Executive, Melanie Walker, and Chair, Julie Dent, of the Devon Partnership NHS Trust, on Friday 20 July 2018, to discuss the future of mental health services in Devon.

The meeting focused on the Trust’s plans for the future, including the opening of a new Mother and Baby Unit and Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, and the development of their community mental health services. Discussion also took place over the Trust’s consistent performance over the last few years in meeting all of their major quality and performance targets.

During the meeting, the MP talked about the Government’s plans for mental health, including the additional £1 billion allocated to action the recommendations of the national strategy published in 2016, which seeks to ensure that people receive the right care in the right place when they need it most.

Geoffrey Cox QC, MP, said: “Tackling poor mental health is a key priority, especially in rural areas such as Torridge and West Devon, where unemployment, low wages and isolation can be significant factors contributing to an increase in mental health issues.

“The Devon Partnership NHS Trust are working hard to ensure that people across Devon can access the services and care they need, and year on year we are seeing improvements being made. There is still some way to go, especially as the number of people presenting with mental health problems is increasing, but I am confident that the Trust will go on improving services, and I will continue to support them in any way I can as the MP for Torridge and West Devon.”
