Help to Buy

17th September 2015
It has been another few busy weeks with the return of Parliament and a number of important votes in the House of Commons. I believe we saw the right outcome when it came to the Assisted Dying Bill and I continue to share the view of the majority of MPs that the right protections were not contained within the Bill and that our first priority should be ensuring that high quality end of life care is available to all.
When it came to the recent vote on the rules for the EU Referendum, I felt it was important to see traditional purdah measures remain in place ahead of the vote and I was determined to ensure that local concerns were represented. Naturally, I am pleased that the Government is making progress on putting the question to the people and look forward to a full and frank debate locally.
Here in the constituency, I was also delighted to have the opportunity to welcome Defence Minister Philip Dunne to Appledore Shipyard. These visits are important and help showcase the skills and capacity on the site, which has been building sections of our new aircraft carriers.
More generally, I also welcome the fact that new figures have shown this week that over 100 local families and individuals have benefited from the Government’s Help to Buy scheme here in Torridge and West Devon. As I said during the election, I believe it is really important that our young people have the opportunity to own their own home and that families are not force to move away from our communities in order to get on the housing ladder.
Help to Buy was introduced by the Conservatives to help tackle these issues and to support people in achieve their aspiration of buying their own home. Across the country, Help to Buy has now helped thousands of families and I am particularly pleased that around 80 per cent of those who have been assisted are first-time buyers.
I am also pleased that from December, the Government’s new Help to Buy ISAs will provide additional support to those saving for their first home by providing a government boost to their deposit. I believe this will help ensure we continue to see a new generation of homeowners locally and that can only be a good thing for local families.
