As a resident living close to the proposed data centre and BESS site, you are among those most likely to experience the impacts of both construction and the operation of the development. I am aware of the strength of feeling within our communities and believe it is vital that those most affected have the opportunity to be heard.
While I have serious reservations about these proposals, I do not have a formal role in determining any planning application. However, I will use every opportunity available to hold Xlinks to account, keep them committed to approaching the planning application through the local process rather than going straight to the Secretary of State, raise residents’ concerns, challenge any shortcomings in the information provided and press for genuine engagement with the communities affected. It is essential that this process is properly considered locally by those who understand the area best.
You may wish to consider the following issues when submitting their views:
- Landscape impact: The effect of a large-scale industrial development on the rural character of the area.
- Agricultural land: The loss of productive farmland and impact on the countryside.
- Highways: The impact of construction traffic, including HGV movements, on local roads and safety.
- Environmental impacts: Potential effects on biodiversity, habitats and the wider natural environment.
- Community impacts: Concerns around noise, lighting, drainage, energy infrastructure and BESS safety.
A key part of my work will be preparing and securing answers to a schedule of questions for Xlinks, informed by your responses. Alongside meetings with Xlinks and Torridge District Council, constituency surgeries, meetings and site visits, I will be keeping a very close watch on this proposal and working to ensure that the information available to you is accurate and reliable.
