MP meets North Devon Autism support group

Geoffrey Cox, MP for Torridge and West Devon met members of the North Devon Forum for Autism and Related Behaviors recently to discuss the local learning provision for disabled and autistic children and to listen to the families' experiences in Torridge.

The parents conveyed to the MP the continuing difficulties of obtaining a proper diagnosis and education for their children and the constant battle to secure recognition of their needs. Essential provision such as speech therapy was still very rare. They stressed the need for an informed understanding of autism, and expressed their concern that help and support, as well as resources, were often not present in mainstream schools to enable them to provide a suitable education despite the Devon County Council's policy of reducing places at special schools.

The overall aim of the group is to support parents and carers and people with ASD in North Devon, which without the efforts of people like Lin Harding, who organised the meeting, would not be able to take place.

Geoffrey Cox, who is a member of the APPG for Autism, and takes a special interest in the subject, said: "for the last three years, I have been pressing the County Council and the Devon Partnership Trust in my meetings with them on their policies and provision for autism and the learning disabled. Listening to parents from the North Devon Forum convinces me that independent help and advice are needed to help families negotiate the sometimes bewildering and adversarial "statementing" system and that there is a great need in Devon for families to be able to gain access to specialist medical expertise in autistic spectrum disorders."
