MP Geoffrey Cox says thank you... and calls for unity in facing national and local challenges
10th May 2010
Geoffrey Cox has expressed his "sincere and profound thanks" to all those who supported him at the general election for placing their trust in him again.
Geoffrey Cox, MP for Torridge and West Devon, has expressed his "sincere and profound thanks" to all those who supported him at the general election for placing their trust in him again and said that he will continue to represent and work hard for local people in Torridge and West Devon regardless of their political view. The MP was re-elected with 45.7% of the popular vote, the highest vote share of any Torridge and West Devon incumbent since 1992, and an unaltered majority once adjusted for the changed boundaries.
The MP said that people should not dwell on negative aspects of the recent campaign, and emphasised that it was time now to put aside the inevitable differences of the election and to work together in mutual respect for the benefit of the country and of Torridge and West Devon.
At the election count, Geoffrey Cox said: "I have always had the greatest respect for those who cannot agree with me on political principle, but it is essential now, in the interests of the country and of our area, that we concentrate on what unites us, not what divides us. We have huge national economic challenges to face, and it is vital to ensure that our local communities are powerfully represented in the decisions that are made by the new government that is formed in the next few days. I am getting down to that work immediately.
He continued: "There are always knocks given and taken in a general election, some of them fair and some of them unfair, but we have to move on and extend the hand of friendship to each other for the benefit of all. We need to make the best of this situation. That is what the country expects and what on the campaign trail many people told me they wanted should there be no conclusive result."
Geoffrey Cox MP's constituency office, which had to be suspended for the general election, reopens for business on Monday 10 May 2010. Geoffrey can be contacted at tellgeoffrey@geoffreycox.co.uk or by telephone on 01237 459001.
