Geoffrey Cox maintains pressure on Government regarding red diesel

Torridge and West Devon’s MP Geoffrey Cox has followed up a meeting with the Economic Secretary to the Treasury by laying a series of Parliamentary Questions to the Chancellor of the Exchequer with regard to the use of red diesel in farm vehicles when supporting community activities and the potential for a change in policy. HMRC's actions in fining John Thorne of Hartland has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the extent to which farmers can use their vehicles to help local communities.

Last month it was announced that the MP had won a review of HMRC policy in the area. Now, Mr Cox, who has been corresponding with anxious constituents on the issue, has pressed the Treasury for a speedy resolution to the review.

Geoffrey comments: “I sought clarification on how the review that we secured was progressing. I am pleased to say the response indicates that the internal review is well under way.

“With the coldest part of winter approaching and parish councils telling me that farmers are to be asked to help grit our local roads it is also important that the review includes the full range of rural activities that they must be able to undertake without the threat of a fine. I will of course ensure I continue the pressure on this vital subject as Christmas approaches.”
